Why create a Business Blog and How to Make Your Blog Successful

By - Michael Rader

In today’s Internet-dominated business world, creating a solid online presence is a necessity, not a luxury. As current members of the millennial generation begin to take a more prevalent role in the business sector, the success of your business will be even more dependent on your successful integration of all things Internet-related.

Virtually all businesses have long since understood the importance of having an attractive and informative website. Most also understand the need to be active on social media. Today’s society relies largely on their ability to find what they are looking for within a few clicks. Companies that don’t appear on the screen within those clicks do not have a fighting chance. Can you remember when people looked through the Yellow Pages to find the business they were looking for? Me too; but those days are gone.

The Need For Something More

In addition to taking advantage of social media platforms, the most successful companies have something else in common. They all have strong and vibrant blogs that serve as central parts of their marketing strategies. Why the need for blogging? Maintaining an updated, relevant, and engaging blog can be the difference between languishing in a cyber-black hole and reaching new customers.

Some people have tried blogs, both business and personal, and found them either not effective or too much work. The web is full of abandoned and mistreated blogs. The problem, however, is usually with the blogger, not the blog itself. Some people blog for years and aren’t able to reap its rewards. Others are able to work smarter, not harder, and have found great success with the genre.

Why should you blog? Starting and maintaining a strong business blog has several benefits. Among them are:

  • Blogging helps you build your brand and drives traffic to your site.
  • It helps you increase your SEO (search engine optimization) and SERP (search engine results page).
  • It helps you establish yourself as an authority within your industry.
  • It connects you with customers and potential clients.
  • It enables you to provide value to your community.
  • It develops your expertise and keeps you inspired to continue learning

The first thing you need to do when beginning a blog is to determine what you want to accomplish. What are your goals? How will you measure your success? Understanding why you are entering the blogging world is an important first step.

How Should I Blog?

Now that we understand why to blog, let’s talk about how to blog. It isn’t enough to simply talk about your company by giving readers updates and news tidbits. If your readers do not find your blog to be of any value to their lives, they will not return. Rambling on about items that are only important to you will not increase your readership.

Instead, talk about industry news, new or emerging professionals within your field, or post interviews with industry professionals. You can also utilize videos, infographics, graphs or charts, and other visual aids. Remember, today’s Internet viewer expects to receive information quickly and effortlessly. Therefore, they are more likely to stop on a post that combines words and pictures.

What Should I Write About?

At this point, some people may wonder how he/she can think of new and interesting content on an ongoing basis. Where do the ideas come from? Fortunately, you don’t have to be a writer or English major to maintain a strong blog. You simply need to pay attention to your customers. What questions have you been receiving? What issues are your customers facing? Giving your readers what they both want and need to hear should be the focus of your content. You can also get ideas from social media sites. What’s the buzz within your industry? What topic has people talking?

I Started A Blog, Now What?

One of the most important requirements of a strong business blog is frequent updates. Keeping your blog relevant shows your potential customers that you are interested and engaged within the industry. Nothing is more disheartening than finding a blog that hasn’t been updated in months. Those types of sites do not see return traffic. Put your heart and soul into the blog. Remember, for many customers, your blog is their first impression of your company. What do you want that impression to be?

Once you start attracting new visitors to your blog, be sure to interact with them. Respond to their comments and answer their questions. Show them that you care about them and want them to be a part of your team. Readers that feel valued and appreciated are far more likely to do business with your company than those that don’t. You will build trust with your clients by proving that you are knowledgeable, caring, and diligent.

Finally, make sure that your blog is appealing to visitors. It isn’t enough to simply put words on the page. Utilizing a variety of formatting and design strategies can help you keep the traffic that hits your site. Getting visitors to your site is meaningless if they aren’t staying. Use small paragraphs that are easily digestible by readers. As mentioned, use visuals whenever possible. Lastly, make your information easier to read by employing numbered lists and bullet points. Remember, today’s Internet user typically has a very short attention span. You need to make a good impression quickly. Good for you If you’ve read this far!
