The Instinct of Business

The idea of starting your own business is not always a comfortable feeling. Being overwhelmed and unsure of yourself is completely normal. Even the most confident entrepreneurs have experienced periods of doubt and uncertainty. The ones who make it out of this phase are those who possess at least two things: in-depth knowledge and instinct. The knowledge part can obviously be developed. There are many ways to study and familiarize yourself with your industry’s concepts and skills. The instinct side of the coin, however, is sometimes harder to come by.

Ignoring your inner voice

We all possess an innate ability to sense right from wrong, no matter what your philosophy teacher taught you. We can feel when we have strayed from a certain path and have gone astray. Some people spend a lot of time and energy ignoring their inner voice – usually people that don’t like what it has to say. The longer we shut it out, the harder it is to hear. Eventually, it can disappear altogether.

Other people have truly embraced their instincts, making that little voice an important part of their lives. They trust their gut when it comes to making decisions, and can immediately hear it screaming when they’ve made a mistake. The hard part is that trusting your instincts takes courage. It takes a commitment to doing what is right for you and your company, regardless of the possible consequences. You should not fear, however. Invariably, not trusting your inner voice leads to far greater issues.

Choosing a name for your business

Many people experience instinctual reverberations when it comes to choosing a business name. They either feel that a moniker is right for them, or their gut insists on something different. From experience, I know that trusting that instinct is the best, and cost-effective, thing you can do for your company. We renamed our business four times, spending way too much money in the process. Had we trusted our instincts from the beginning, we could have avoided a great deal of unnecessary struggle.

A company’s name is its identity; it is a textual depiction of its heart and soul. A business that is uncomfortable with or unsure about their name is not going to treat it as well as a name they are passionate about. If you have reservations early in the branding process, stop and reevaluate. Passion is something that cannot be faked. You have a passion for what you are doing; now you need a passion for the title of what you are doing.

In addition, going forward with a name that you are not 100% satisfied with can be detrimental to the future of your business. We have written about many companies that did not follow their instincts in regards to how they wanted to launch their companies. Ignoring their inner voice they forged ahead. Many of these companies ended up spending millions of dollars to rectify problems that could have been avoided. Others saw their reputations tarnished forever. Recovering from such blows is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Your business is more than just your livelihood; it is your dream. It needs to be protected and nurtured in a way that helps it grow and develop. Pushing ahead with a name or other business concept that does not resonate with you is an exercise in futility. Like I said, passion cannot be faked. On the other hand, it is also contagious. The more you believe in your company and its future, the more those around you will also believe. The bottom line is that your instinct exists for a reason. Trust it. Allow it to help you make decisions that make sense. Give it the say that it deserves and let it help guide you to the success you crave.
